Question of the Week
Week of 8/13/07

Q: How do I forgive someone of a crime that they committed against me?

A: Offering forgiveness to dangerous people does not excuse the crime, invalidate the pain, or remove the consequences. Forgiveness is about what is going on in your heart. You may have been the victim of a crime, but you do not need to remain a victim.

Forgiveness defined is giving up the right to hurt someone else for hurting you. From Scripture we learn that forgiveness has no limits. Ask yourself this question: What sins will God not forgive? The answer to that question applies to our application of forgiveness as well. We forgive because Christ first forgave us. He is our source.

By no means does forgiving this individual require you to place yourself in an unsafe environment. If this individual still poses a threat, avoiding him or her while simultaneously forgiving is possible.

The key is a forgiving spirit. Forgiveness is the antidote to bitterness and resentment. Christ wants you to be free!

Blessings!
