And [Jacob] came near and kissed [Isaac]; and [Isaac] blessed him. Genesis 27:27
Every child needs to be touched. And yet many parents (particularly fathers) stop touching their children when the children reach the grade school years! When this happens, an element of the blessing stops. Most parents know a four-year-old's need to be cuddled. But what about a fourteen-year-old's need to be meaningfully touched by his mother or father (even if the teenager outwardly cringes when he or she is hugged)? Or how about the appropriate touching a thirty-four-year-old needs? Or your spouse or a close friend?
How old was Jacob when our Scriptures example happened? Genesis 26:34 tells us that Esau married at age forty, and this was before Isaac's blessing. Since Jacob was Esau's twin, he must have been at least forty years old when Isaac blessed him! And yet Isaac didn't set age barriers around the need to be touched. His blessing for his forty-year-old son came complete with a hug or a kiss. He gives us a model that parents, husbands and wives, and even friends at church can follow in giving the blessing.
We are never too old to benefit from receivingand givingmeaningful touch.
